COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A survey of all the books of the Old Testament, classified as historical, wisdom and prophetical. This study will examine, with an emphasis in traditional Biblical typology, the revelatory stages of salvation history and the importance of fulfilled prophecy. Throughout the course, the students will be directed to the canon of traditional iconographic representation of significant events of the Old Covenant and, thereby, have a unique understanding both of the truths being considered and the importance of visual imagery in the proclamation of the Faith and ongoing catechesis.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course the students will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in the Old Testament as it relates to Salvation History.

Lecture 1     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Genesis, chapters 1-3, as they relate to Salvation History.

  • Part 3: Images of Creation, Adam, and the Fall

 

Lecture 2     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Genesis, chapters 4-14, as they relate to Salvation History.

  • Part 1: Genesis 4-14
  • Part 2: Genesis 15-27                 
  • Part 3: Images of the Flood and Abraham’s Sacrifice

 

Lecture 3     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Genesis, chapters 28-50 and The Book of Exodus, chapters 1-12, astray relate to Salvation History.

  • Part 1: Genesis 28-50, Exodus 1-12
  • Part 2: Exodus 20-32                       
  • Part 3: Images of Jacob’s Ladder, Joseph, and the Call of Moses

 

Lecture 4     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Exodus, chapters 33-40, The Book of Leviticus, and The Book of Numbers, chapters 1-9, as they relate to Salvation History.

Lecture 5     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Numbers, chapters 10-20, and The Book Deuteronomy, as they relate to Salvation History.

Lecture 6     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Joshua, chapters 1-24, The Book of Judges, and The Book of Ruth, as they relate to Salvation History.

  • Part 3: Images of the Baptism of Jesus, Book of Revelation 

 

Lecture 7     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of 1 Samuel, and The Book of 2 Samuel, chapters 1-24, as they relate to Salvation History.

  • Part 1: 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel 1-24
  • Part 2: Images of Samuel and the Anointing of David

 

Lecture 8     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of 2 Samuel, chapter 24, and The Book of 1 Kings, chapters 1-11, as thay relate to Salvation History.

  • Part 1: 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Kings 1-6
  • Part 2: 1 Kings 6 - 11 (currently unavailable)
  • Part 3: Images of Solomon and the Presentation of the Theotokos

 

Lecture 9     

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of 1 Kings, chapters 12-22, The Book of 2 Kings, chapters 1-25, and The Book of Chronicles as they relate to Salvation History.

Lecture 10  

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in the wisdom literature, the prophetic literature, and The Book of Psalms, as they relate to Salvation History.

Lecture 11  

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of Daniel, The Book of Ezra, and The Book of Malachi, as they relate to Salvation History.

Lecture 12  

By the end of this lesson the student will be able to discuss the Biblical typology present in The Book of 1 Maccabees, chapters 1-16, and the Book of 2 Maccabees, as they relate to Salvation History.

Lecture 13  

Review

  • Part 1 & 2: New Testament’s Fulfillment of the Old Testament

EXAM:  There is one final comprehensive exam.  The format is subjective in short essay and you will have 3 hours to complete it.  It is open bible but not open notes.  You may use, however, any notes that are written in your bible so take careful notes in your bible throughout the semester.  Highlight and mark it up.  Just be sure to do it neatly! 

 

GRADING: The student’s course grade is based on the midterm exam score (50%) and final exam score (50%).
